Krystal Skinner
My work celebrates the boundless possibilities found in childlike wonder while addressing the deep human need for connection and restoration. Rooted in abstract expressionism, my practice explores color, texture, and emotional resonance as vehicles for collective healing. Each piece serves as both artistic expression and therapeutic intervention, designed to promote well-being in healthcare settings, public spaces, and community gathering areas. Abstract expressionism allows me to communicate beyond words—using bold color relationships, gestural mark-making, and layered textures to create emotional landscapes that resonate with viewers’ own experiences. My canvases and mixed-media works become spaces for contemplation and reflection, inviting viewers to bring their own interpretations and emotional responses to the conversation. This open-ended quality makes the work accessible across diverse audiences, transcending language barriers and cultural differences.
My practice integrates multiple disciplines including painting, textile arts, and mixed-media installation. Through Empty Canvas Creations, I create two-dimensional works for public and private spaces that combine expressive color theory with tactile elements, making art that can be both seen and touched. This commitment to accessibility ensures that people of all abilities can engage meaningfully with creative expression.
Currently, I am developing textile installations for libraries that depict landscapes specifically designed for children’s sensory engagement. The planned Public Library exhibit features tactile landscapes created to invite young hands to explore topography, color, and texture through touch. In November 2025, the multiple award winning piece, Touching Texoma Landscapes will join Anna Community Library’s permanent collection—a somewhat three-dimensional piece featuring protruding clouds that invite interaction and wonder. It is the inspiration and vehicle for the larger exhibit; and will be available for public viewing and enjoyment. These projects exemplify my commitment to making art accessible across all abilities and ages while bringing expressive color and form into everyday community spaces.
My two-dimensional public installations incorporate biophilic principles—the human connection to nature—and color psychology to create calming environments that actively promote emotional well-being. By translating natural forms through abstract expressionist techniques, I create work that feels both familiar and fresh, grounding yet uplifting. The layered textures in my textile works echo the gestural quality of my paintings, creating cohesive visual language across mediums. My practice is deeply rooted in the belief that creative expression is a universal right that transcends physical and socioeconomic barriers. Through Empty Canvas Creations, I facilitate workshops and collaborative art experiences that build community connections while addressing resilience through artistic expression. These workshops demystify the creative process, showing participants that art-making is not about technical perfection but about authentic self-expression and emotional exploration.
As my practice evolves, I am again exploring impasto and sculptural elements—expanding from two-dimensional work toward forms that occupy space more dynamically. The upholstered cloud panel for Anna Community Library represents this evolution, where painted and textile surfaces begin to emerge into three-dimensional space. This emerging direction builds naturally from my abstract expressionist foundation, where gesture and texture have always suggested depth and movement beyond the picture plane.
Every element I create is an invitation to participate in collective healing. Through my abstract expressionist works, textile installations, and community collaboration projects, I strive to inspire others to embrace their creativity, connect authentically with one another, and become agents of positive change in their own lives and communities. Together, we create spaces where art transcends passive observation to become active participation in shaping our shared future with beauty, imagination, and hope. My work stands as testimony that from life’s most challenging moments can emerge art that serves not only personal healing but community transformation—spaces where everyone, regardless of physical ability or background, can find connection, wonder, and renewal through color, texture, and expressive form.
