Director, Creative Arts Center of Bonham

Over the past year, I’ve had the honor of serving as the Director of the Creative Arts Center in Bonham. This role has been a journey of learning and growth, filled with insights about the importance of the arts. But the most profound lesson I’ve learned is this: artists need community.

Time and again, I have witnessed how artists not only benefit from community but thrive in it. As we experimented with different classes, events, and activities, the same theme emerged—artists flourish when they are surrounded by fellow creatives. Conversations with artists and interactions with other arts organizations reinforced this truth: artistic growth is amplified in a supportive environment.

At opening night receptions, I have seen artists naturally gravitate toward one another. They exchange feedback, discuss techniques, and share inspiration. These moments of connection fuel their passion and creativity in ways that solitary work cannot.

In 2024, we launched Painting Get-Togethers, inviting artists to bring their current projects and supplies to enjoy the creative process together. What started as a small gathering of painters quickly grew into a broader Artists Get-Together, welcoming basket weavers, fiber artists, wind chime creators, and more. These sessions became more than just a time to work—they evolved into spaces for laughter, encouragement, idea-sharing, and mutual support.

By 2025, our Artists Get-Togethers have found a rhythm, occurring on the last Friday of each month. They became a haven for artists to connect, receive feedback, and draw inspiration from one another. In response to growing interest, we also introduced Sip & Stitch, a monthly Thursday evening gathering for fiber artists who crochet, knit, embroider, or hand sew. This initiative started with a single phone call from someone seeking a place to meet fellow fiber artists, proving once again how vital community is to creativity.

We always encourage artists dropping off work for our monthly exhibits to attend the opening night receptions. These events are not just about showcasing art—they are opportunities to build relationships, gain insights, and find encouragement. The conversations and connections made during these evenings often spark new ideas and provide valuable feedback that helps artists refine their craft.

I have personally witnessed artists—including myself—gain confidence as they immerse themselves in this growing artistic community. Artist and board member Jessie Bryant with 3 Little Birds Paintings has shared her experiences of growing confidence in her blog Shine On.

Collaboration has also flourished in many ways. Our current mural project at the center has brought multiple artists together to create something larger than themselves. The experience has already been a testament to the power of shared creativity.
